11.Wealth and HappinessWealth
has always been what some people long for.It is true that most of
them try to acquire wealth by means of honest labour. Their efforts
contribute to the welfare of the society and at the same time to accumulation
of their wealth,and hence their happiness.
There is no doubt that wealth brings happiness especially in
the modern society,where various kinds of modern conveniences,new fashions and
entertainments make their appearances with each passing day to make life more comfortable
and colourful.Only money can turn admiration into reality.
But there are exceptions when wealth does not go hand in hand
with happiness.Wealth may encourage those weak-willed persons to be addicted to some
harmful habit,such as drug-taking or gambling,and bring about their own ruin.Also,a person
may lose his reason and go astray if he is passionately devoted to seeking
wealth.Therefore,one can never reckon only on wealth to achieve happiness.
12.Fighting CriminalsToday the crime rate in soe cities
of our country is rising. Many citizens often complain about the thefts and robberies
that have taken palce in the areas they live in and appeal to the governments at all
levels to take effective measures to reduce the crime rate.
Faced with criminals,some people are so frightened that
they shamelessly give up the fight and other people turn a blind eye to them.However,some
people are brave enough,to risk their lives to fight the criminals.Their fearless actions
prevented the criminals from doing evils,saved the victims,and protected the public
properties.
To reduce the crime rate,we all the people should first receive
a law education.Criminals must be severely punished.Meanwhile we should set up a
foundation to reward those who fight criminals.It is also important to call on people to
learn from those heroes and encourage more people to stand up to crime.
13.Housing problemHousing problem comes hand in hand
with population growth. Some big cities in China are now encumbered with a rising
population. Naturally,one of the most serious problems incurred is that of housing.
Despite the mushrooming high building,the provision of living
space still falls far short of demands.Since the world is advancing, people are no
longer reconciled to living in shabby shelters.They look forward to decent dwelling places
which can protect huan dignity.
Various solutions have been suggested.But there seems to be
a drawback to each of the solutions.The traditional free allocation of dwellings to the
needy brings great economic burden to the government, while paid allocation brings equal
burden to the average people.The moving of urban population to the suburbs may ease
housing problem in inner city but brings about traffic problem.The best solution seems to
be a combination of all suggeted solutions.We still have a long way to go.
14.The study of ScienceScience is important to most
people living in the modern world for a number of reasons.Science is important to
world peace,to the understanding of technology,and to our understanding of the natural
world.Science is also an interesting area of study for a number of reasons.Some areas of
science are espacially interesting because they deal with questions all men and women ask
themselves.Science tries to procide some explanations for what happens to people.
Science is hard to study.One of the reason is that there
are so many questions without answers.Much of sciece involves asking questions, and then
studying and doing research to try to find the answers.Some questions have been studied by
research scientists for many years,and the answers are still not known.However,scientists
are slowly but surely able to answer more and more questions about life,and these answers
change our lives and also explain them.
All of the many different kinds of science are important and
interesting.Scientists are asking and answering many interesting and important
questions about people and their lives.A basic knowledge of science can help you to
understand both the questions and the answers. In the modern world,this ability is
essential to everyone.
15.Birth ControlSince the Chinese Government singled out
family planning as one of the basic state policies in 1978,the country has adopted various
measures and achieved great success in birth control.The total birth rate has been
decreasing gradually.
However,at present China's population is still growing very
rapidly.It is reported that every year the population of this country increases by an
extra 15 million and China is encountering a birth peak during the 1990s.It is abvious
that China's economic development and improvement of people's living standards have been
and will be greatly affected by the population.
Therefore,to control population growth more strictly is clearly
essential to the country's reforms and economic development.We should re-stress the
importance of birth control and call on the whole nation to make more effective actions.
16.Family EducationParents in China are paying more
attention to the training of their single-child than ever before. Now, many children in
city have family tutors and more and more children have to learn a lot before they go to
school. This is mainly because parents want their children to become somebody or to live
better when they grow up. In addition, single-child families have more money and energy
than before to afford family training.
Family education has either advantages or disadvantages. The main
advantage is that children can learn much and can develop themselves as early as possible,
which are more helpful to leading them to success or make them superior to other children.
The disadvantage lies in two. One is that too much family education may cause the children
to lose their own ability of living and studying. The other is that children will have
less time to play or to do their own favorite things. This may be harmful to the shape of
children's charters.
In my opinion family education should have a proper degree. Either
too much or too little family education will do great harm to children or even lead to
opposite result.
17.BikesBikes are the popular vehicles in China today. They
can do not consume and fuel; they do not need a garage or a large parking lot; they can
run on rough narrow roads; they provide exercise for townspeople. It is said that about
they fifty percent of people in our city go to work by bike. On farms, bikes are even more
useful: they are horseless carts.
With every passing year, more and more bikes crowd our roads and
streets. This has created a serious problem: many accidents are caused by bike riders who
neglect traffic regulations.
In small towns and on country roads, mixed traffic is still
common. Bikes go along with pedestrians and motor vehicles. This, of course, is very
dangerous. It is necessary for them to keep away from each other wherever possible.
18.Reading BooksWhen you enter a book-store or a library,
you'll find a brilliant world in front of you. We are growing up with books and reading is
not only a recreation, but also a way of shaping our personality, of widening the scope of
our knowledge.
Facing so many books, how can you do with your readings? I think
you have to make it clear why you do some readings. Some books may help you to gain ne
knowledge, some relax yourself, so you must make a choice according to your interest or a
certain target. For knowledge, you may do intensive readings; for relaxation, you may read
them leisurely.
I like reading Chinese classical books. When I am occupied with
them, I usually feel refreshed. In talking with history and reality, I sometimes feel that
I'm a general with thousands of soldiers. In a word, reading is part of my life. I will do
more reading to make me a learned person.
19.Economic Development and PollutionNowadays China's
economy has been developing in a surprising speed. However, it is followed by an
environmental problem. So many rivers and lakes have been polluted to such an extent that
people can not drink the water from them, and no fish can be seen in them. If you walk
along or stand on the bank, you may smell strange odor from rotten rubbish sent into the
rivers and lakes.
What are the reasons of the pollution? One is that we neglect the
environmental protection when we develop the economy. Even in some areas, people have
destroyed the environment in order to make more money. The other is that we haven't
efficient devices to prevent pollution. Some factories have no enough funds to equip
themselves with the advanced facilities.
In order to solve the problem people should be ????cultivated with
the awareness of protecting the environment. In addition, the government should establish
a set of laws and regulations to restrict and even punish those polluting action.
20.WasteMankind is wasting things everywhere and everyday.
Whenever we go, we can see that paper, bottles and cans are thrown away; food is wasted
just because of poor taste; clothes are discarded simply due to their old fashion. Not
only things and money are wasted, but natural resources are abused as well. Trees are cut
down merely for fuel; wild animals are killed simply for meat; oil and coal are exploited
in a bad way.
The worst example of man's waste is the waste of time. Many people
tend to spend their time on worthless things, such as wandering about in the street,
gossiping in the office, sleeping too much during the day. As we know, time is so precious
to us that it passes by and never returns. The waste of time amounts to the waste life.
It is time to call for an end to the waste. On one hand, we must
save natural resources and make full us of them; otherwise human beings will be faced with
the shortage of natural resources and suffer from the pollution caused by wastes. On the
other hand, we must treasure our time. Only with out time to be devoted to the study and
the work for the people, will we never regret the life we have had.
